Introduction to Gilgit
Gilgit is the administrative capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, located on the northern side of Pakistan at the junction of three mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush. It lies along the Silk Road, which was a historical trade route that connected China to the Middle East and Europe. The Silk Road is now replaced by the Karakoram Highway, which is known as the eighth wonder of the world, connecting Pakistan with China. It is visited by many tourists every year because of the immense beauty that it holds. The nature is just so soothing to the eye and remembered for a very long time.
The best time to visit is usually from May to October, just before the winter season, in which roads are usually blocked due to heavy snowfall. Mostly it is visited around summertime when flowers are blooming and the weather is just right. People come here for activities like hiking, climbing, fishing, camping, rafting, and photography, or just to spend some quality time in peace.
Traveling to Gilgit
One can travel to Gilgit both by road and by air. With domestic flights, Gilgit Airport now entertains international flights as well. Domestic flights operate both from Lahore and Islamabad, which usually last for 1 hour 30 minutes while traveling by road takes about 12 to 16 hours from Islamabad.
Main attractions
- The landscapes that you get to see in this valley will leave you breathless. Most of the time around the year it is covered in snow. The pine forests and the snow-covered mountains fit with each other so well and look magnificent together. As it is covered in snow most of the time, it is an important spot for skiing, and people do come here to experience skiing in these mountains. Skiing sports competitions are also held in this valley. People from all around Pakistan participate in this. This ski resort is run by the Pakistan Air Force.
Crystal-clear lake known as “Satrangi Lake” is also present here, which is an attractive picnic spot for visitors. Camping is also enjoyed here, in which you also get to enjoy stargazing at night .
- Kargah Buddha: It is located about 10km away from Gilgit. It's a 7th-century rock carving of a Buddha, and the rock is about 3 meters high. This place reflects Buddhist culture, as their way of preaching was rock carvings, and these carvings can be seen in this area. These carvings were carved by Buddhists themselves in the 7th century. For people who like history and architecture and seek adventure, this place is a must-visit for them.
- Fairy Meadows: What a view this place holds! It literally feels like something out of this world. Although it's a must-visit place, it can be a little time-consuming and challenging to reach, especially for the elderly or for people who are not fit. First, a jeep is to be hired, which takes you to Tato Village, and after that, it's a 5km hike from Tato Village. For those who can't hike, horses are also available.
Mostly people come here to camp overnight and enjoy the magical experience. Nanga Parbat peaks can be seen clearly from here. You just need to be well prepared for the night's stay and keep weather conditions in mind to dress accordingly.
In 2024, approximately one million tourists visited Gilgit, including both domestic and international tourists. The thing that attracts many tourists is the presence of the highest mountain peaks, which are Nanga Parbat (8126 m) and Rakaposhi (7788 m).
- Danyor suspension bridge: This one is also a good picnic spot with a view of this wooden bridge hung over the fast-flowing river underneath. an interesting place for photographers.
- Karakoram Highway: This road passes from Gilgit towards China and leads to Khunjerab Pass. The drive through this highway is not a thing to be missed because of the scenery that you get to see throughout the drive. The stunning views of mountains Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi, with various attractions along the way, are worth experiencing. This road is one of the most beautiful roads in the world to drive through, and therefore it is called the eighth wonder of the world.
- Bagrot Valley: If you want to see the culture of Gilgit people up close, this valley is the one. This valley is rich in beauty, and the view of glaciers can also be seen here. You get to experience the traditional lifestyle of residents and how simple their life really is. These people live closest to nature and are blessed to get everything in its pure form without being polluted by chemicals.
- Gilgit Bazar: This market is full of handicrafts, shawls, woolen goods and fabrics, dried fruits, stones, and a lot of antique stuff. This market reflects the culture of the Gilgit people, and it is so much fun to see unique things here. The Gilgit River and parks are also near this market for a relaxing and peaceful walk in nature.
An important tip
Always take warm clothes with you because even if you are visiting in summer, the nights can be cold. When going to heights for camping, warm sleeping bags or clothes are a must to protect yourself from extreme cold.
